A Guide to the BBC Summer Festival

Come summertime, all eyes are on the BBC Summer Festival program schedule. Held at the NEC, Birmingham, the annual event attracts large crowds from all walks of life and of all ages.

As part of the BBC Summer Festival, visitors come to pick up tips on perfecting their green thumb at the BBC Gardeners' World Live and to gain culinary inspiration at the BBC Good Food Show Summer. The Countryfile magazine area offers a glimpse of the British countryside, while the Good Homes magazine area provides stylish and innovative tips for interior design. If you've got a kitchen or dining room project that needs a fresh look, the Good Homes area is where it's at. A craft pavilion is available here for those seeking to start new craft projects or enhance existing ones.

At the 2008 event, which ran from the 11th to the 15th of June, a special section designated A Sustainable Future was set up in the Countryfile magazine area to provide advice on reducing one's carbon footprint and protecting the environment. There was also an Xcape to the Sun Property Pavilion for property developers, estate agents, and service companies to meet potential clients interested in purchasing a home.

Gardeners' Green was set up for the 2008 event, in order to entertain the children and give the parents a rest! It featured a fun area for face painting, magicians, tricks and balloon modelling. The children were given the opportunity to play with members of the British Rugby League team. Art lovers would not want to miss the Special Art in the Garden workshops, where plants and nature are used as inspiration for the pieces. The BBC Gardeners' World Live provided many opportunities to gain expert advice from celebrity gardeners such as Alan Titchmarsh, Monty Don and Joe Swift. Visitors can walk among the show gardens and featured areas such as an allotment and an orchard to gain inspiration for gardening projects. A variety of unusual plants are available here for sale.

The BBC Good Food Show Summer offers visitors numerous cooking demonstrations by celebrity chefs such as Gordon Ramsay, James Martin, and the Hairy Bikers. Guests have the opportunity to experiment with kitchen gadgets and taste some of the great food and drink being showcased at the event.

Taken altogether, the BBC Summer Festival aims to have something for the whole family to enjoy with many different attractions taking place concurrently throughout the day.
