Designer Clothes and Social Implications

We see it all these days across every platform of the media - TV, film, magazines; they're are all doing it. The marketing machine has a toe-hold on the arts and that ain't showing any signs of changing. Consumers are influenced by what the people behind their chosen entertainment is wearing.

Designer clothing brands have joined up with the indie scene, the hip hop/urban scene, the goth and death metal scene, and just about every other "scene" you can pull out of the hat. It gives people that sense of belonging. To be part of something.

Clothing and fashion is a huge part of the economy, with people spending millions of pounds each year as they closely follow their favourite clothing brands. but it's not just designer clothes that people are swallowing - companies such as Primark are reporting ridiculously large profits due to their affordable garments.

But what is the difference between people who choose designer clothes that are worn by their favourite artists, and those who opt for cheaper, similar alternatives? We can analyse this until the end of time but it's a pretty safe bet that those who can afford the higher quality garments are quite seperate from those who cannot, thus making these the guys wearing the most expensive gear.

It also depends on brands - where some brands are regarded as leaning more towards budget than others, such as Carter Clothing, other brands with cult followings such as Gio Goi are charging their customers a little more.

It seems that people will pay quite a lot to look the part. One could argue that if you can afford it, then by all means get the more expensive clothes, but if you can't, well there's always Primark!
