However, if we go further back in the history, it was in 1215, that Pope Innocent III, presiding over the Fourth lateral Council, declared that there should be a longer period between the betrothal and marriage. He made it mandatory for the couples to wear rings. These rings consisted of simple bands; rest depended on the economic status of the couples. The band could be of copper, silver or gold.

It was the De beers promotional campaigns, which brought diamonds within the reach of the ordinary men. Since then they have been used as wedding rings.
