Mother's Day throughout the Years

A time more known as a chance for extravagant gift giving and dining out, Mother's Day has been one of the most commercially successful celebration. Throughout this time, dads and kids are scrambling their way to phone in their flower orders, or a reservations to a fancy restaurant. It's during this time of the year, that major corporations are quite pleased with the flow and release of money and excess, that it's hard to imagine that Mother's Day had a very different origin than what it is now.

Mothering Day in England

Mothering Day or what it is now referred to as Mother's Day is actually celebrated on the fourth Sunday of Lent for Britain and England, and it is relegated as the time meant for visiting mother's and families. As time passed and the notion of secularization grew, Mother's Day had become a day meant to celebrate and give thanks to mothers all around.

It came from wishes of peace

The day for celebrating Mother's Day falls differently for the United States, as it takes place every second week of May. Although Mother's Day in the States has taken its roots from the British, it started as a means of peace and solidarity.

Julia Howard Howe wrote a brilliant piece meant specially to stop the ongoing American Civil War, although unfortunately she didn't get the recognition that she wanted. Her idea didn't go to waste, as Anna Jarvis, who took into her own to spread and commemorate the poignant and important servitude and sanitation pursuits that her mother, Ann Jarvis had done in her time, founded a memorial day for women.

The very first Mother's Day took place on her mother's church where she used to teach Sunday school on May 10, 1908. From then on, the whole idea of commemorating and celebrating mothers and their work has caught to the rest of the states, and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson helped celebrate the first national Mother's Day.
