Major Problem to Avoid After Regestering a Domain Name

To some whom read this article this tip may seem like "common sense", but starting out as an absolute newbie to internet technology, this particular issue drove me nuts once I discovered the problem.

After registering my domain at GoDaddy and building a blog at blogger, it was now time to use that name for my site and start building a brand.

Blogger allows you to assign your blog a private domain name. This is an excellent way to get your domain and your brand "out there" with very little expense.

A few months went by and everything looked good, I could type my domain into the address bar and my blog would come up, no worries! Then one day while surfing the forums I discovered a tip completely by accident.

Many people if not most will type a domain name into the address bar, but WITHOUT the "www". I did not think too much about this for a few days, thinking that these kinds of details were handled automatically by whomever registered the domain...

I WAS WRONG. Since I've only worked with GoDaddy, I am not familiar with the other registrars. But after trying to type in my domain without the "www", sure enough, I was redirected to a "self serving" ad laden parking page. Not my own web site!

It took me an entire week to figure this one out, and the help topics or even finding them were a pain at best. The problem was in the "Total DNS and MX records" section of the domain account. They certainly do not seem to make this issue known, but what is required is to add a new "Cname record" or "alias".

The first step is to edit the "www" record to point to your current host ip address, if your site is on blogspot(blogger)then it will be "ghs.google.com". Just simply remove the "@" symbol and type that in.

But now you also have to add a new alias name, click the "add new cname record" button, in this box you will need to type in "yourdomain.com" without the "www" in front.

now give it about an hour or two then go back and check, the "type in" should direct right to your page. Hope this saves you some headaches!
