My Sony Strdg720 7.1 works like a dream. I switch over to an all Sony format as to be able to get all down to one remote. Using this reciever allows me to do that. It is so much better than before when I had 4 different remotes. Also I only have one wire going to the wall mounted HD TV. Neat and clean. I am glad I did it. I am not a tech guy just someone who wants it all and not have to jump through hoops to make it work. It was simple to set up with all those HDMI slots.
Sony 720 Receiver January 6, 2009 spider (brazos valley, tx)
Product works OK, however it does not upconvert any signals to HDMI. The unit will only send like signals to the TV, ie., this means that if any of your peripheral devices aren't HDMI compliant, like a VHS for example, you'll have to run the appropriate cables to your TV, ie., composite, component,s-video, etc etc and you'll wind up with a bunch of cables instead of just one cable to the TV, which is one of the reasons you bought an AV receiver in the first place. pay the extra bucks and get a unit that upconverts, so you'll only need one cable, ie., HDMI out to the TV.
Why bother with a more expensive receiver? January 6, 2009 J. Schroeder (East Setauket, NY)
So far so good. Not very hard to hook up to my Sony Blu Ray and Sony 46 inch Bravia TV and cable box. Yes takes awhile to understand settings but that would be with any receiver. I blasted movies in surround sound to test it out and it was great, even with 10 year old Sony 5.1 surround sound speakers (one day will upgrade to a Bose speaker system). What else do you need in a reciever to spend so much more? Here you have the Sony name and a great price.
Really Nice Receiver January 5, 2009 C. Perry (USA)
I have found very few Sony products that I like or even tolerate. This receiver, however, may have changed my mind about Sony. I needed a receiver that gave me nice 7.1 performance, HDMI audio, and a good price. Sony gave it to me with the DG720. For $250, it pushes hard, sounds clean, and has a nice feature set. I'm really happy with this purchase.
Disappointing product January 4, 2009 A. Reynolds (ROCHESTER, NY)
I bought this receiver and after two weeks of use it went haywire. It stopped sending the video signal to my new samsung 50" plasma tv, and the sound went out too. The picture would come in for a half a second, and then go out for three seconds. When I bypassed the receiver and went right from the cable box to my tv, the signal and tv worked fine. For the two weeks it did work the sound was just ok, I would say it was less 'full' than my 5 yr old yamaha that it replaced (I wanted to go all hdmi so I bought the new receiver). It just sounded a little hollow. If it hadn't broken I wouldn't have replaced it due to the sound, but it didn't sound as good as I had hoped. I mailed it back to Amazon yesterday and I have already purchased a Yamaha 663 on another web retailer as it was $110 less than on Amazon. Now I have to spend all that time hooking everything up again! Other issue I ran into was whenever I watched a blu ray movie on my new PS3 I couldn't adjust the sound settings on the receiver, the PS3 just took over. I didn't know that would happen. (I'm not a real audiophile, not an expert on this stuff)
